For years, he’s been asking me for a quilt, and it’s my bad that I haven’t made one for him yet, so I’m sending him a promissory note tomorrow letting him know I’m on it. We both have fond memories as kids watching TV, huddled under one of the numerous quilts my great grandmother lovingly hand stitched.
Challenge is, he’s of the rugged, hunt/fish, Bass Pro Shop variety. Owning and running a farm and cattle ranch in Washington state, he spends his days wrestling rattlesnakes and irrigation woes, harvesting fruit, and herding cattle. (One time while talking with him over the phone, he put his cell down to tell some guy, “Dude! Watch out! That bull isn’t castrated!”)
In his free time he fly fishes, camps, sails, hunts, and actually broke a horse in (that he delivered) and now gallops on all over his property. Get the picture?
So it’s time I make him a quilt, but it needs to be something more macho than say, maybe grandmother’s flower garden (although it would be a fun challenge to make that in taupes, greens, grays, and blues). I have been looking at a few patterns, and think something with a more modern quilt aesthetic would most likely work for him.

This Asymmetrical Diamond Quilt inspired by Lisa Roddy’s quilt on her blog, Shiner’s View, came up in my Instagram feed yesterday from Robert Kaufman. The color scheme is perfect for Davy with the sandy beiges and watery blues, a throwback to his professional sailing days.

I bought this pattern from the Jaybird Quilts booth at Quilt Festival in Long Beach last summer. Looks like I could whip this quilt up pretty quickly, and I like the positive/negative interplay in the pattern.

I like the first pattern the best, but no matter what you choose, be sure to use some camo fabric so he’ll feel right at home under it.
I like the first one also. Even the colors are more masculine. The others are too busy in my opinion.

I like varsity made one similar fir my husband. Choose his favorite colors
#3 has more life to it and possibilities for fabric selections. It would look smashing in modern solid colors. #1 looks feminine even though its plaids and stripes. #2 looks busy. All just my opinion!
As a guy myself (although perhaps not quite so manly, haha!) I’m drawn to the first and third patterns; it’s hard to say which I like better!

Number one, for sure.
I like the first one, using stripes and plaids (mens shirting patterns, not too feminine), I like the pattern’s asymmetrical contemporary play on a traditional pattern and the blue color palette makes perfect sense for the sailing water and sand reference. Feels very cape cod. And lastly it loos like a snap to put together, a plus for a busy gal like you.
I like the Asymmetrical Diamond best. It’s a nice, clean design – the stripes are fun, but I could see it with additional blue prints (plaids, marbles, etc.) too.
I like the first one. It is more masculine in the design to me.
I, too, like #1. Coming from a farm background, whichever you make, the fabric will determine the outdoorsy look. I like the blue plaid.
I like #3. More unusual than the other two, Has secondary patterns that add interest.

Maybe you should ask him which one he prefers… is this going to be a quilt he’ll use on his bed, a decorative one or to use on the sofa on cold winter nights ? As I was reading your blog I could see your brother (even though I don’t know him!) lying on the couch in the evening watching a moving (like A River runs through or City Slicker) wrapped in a memory quilt with picture of your familly, with backgounds of popcorn and movies… Completely out of theme for him!
Of all three #1 is my favourite.

Number 1 is my choice for Davy. Its asymmetrical arrangement seems to reflect his diverse choices. You know him better though and that makes a difference. I could add that you need to work on what you like and colors you can tolerate or it will never get finished. …been there.
#1 for me 100%! I love homespuns and plaids, and it’s the most “manly” of the three in my opinion. You could stick with the cool palette, or go for a more rustic feel with earth tones.
Quilt 1 is too startling, quilt 2 is too girly, quilt 3 is okay. I made a quilt for my brother to hang on the blanket bar on the back of the seat of his 32 Chevy sedan and one for my grandson because he loved my brother’s quilt. They were made from plaid fabrics gleaned from various places, including men’s shirts. They were on the order of the plaids in Quilt 1, but were perhaps 5 inch squares, just squares side by side and vertically. I tied the quilts and they looked very nice that way. Good luck and please post your quilt when it is done.
I really like the first quilt. I’m sure he will love any quilt you make for him! Just make sure to make it a bit longer than a normal quilt. My husband and son are both very tall but it seems that most men like a quilt that is extra long. Have fun!
Love 1 says open sky, colors and shirt plaids great. 3 is good too, have made Northern Lights from Jay Bird and patterns are quick and easy. Made a black and white, strips that were cut on bias and then put into a tube cut and sewn back together, looked like sun through trees, for my nephew, would not recommend pattern but he loved it. I’m sure whatever pattern you pick he will love it because you made it and he has a part of you to treasure.
Varsity is the best.

I was thinking the same thing. I have a large inventory of homespuns that I haven’t looked at in years. I may crack that one open in the near future. 🙂
definitely the first one. even changing the colors in the other tow won’t make them a better choice than one!
For my husband, I made a bear paw quilt and used what looks like a salmon run fabric for the borders. Great way to use up scraps and it is well loved. There are lots of great fly fishing fabrics available and plaids or whatever outdoor look you want. Have fun. Happy Birthday to him! Shall think of him as we head across W Washington to YNP and MN.

I like door #1 the best. By coincidence, I am working on a quilt for my son, and I agree that masculine quilts are a challenge. My son likes bold colors and designs. I used some wild fabrics that I recently marbled . It is hard to describe, but I think it’s “him.”.

I love quilt #1 best – very manly and farm-like at the same time. Traditional with a modern twist, which would bring back those memories of being under grandma’s quilt.
I’ve given my husband a quilt, it does have flowers on it (oranges and browns), but it was long enough for him, so he puts up with it and loves it :).

I like the second quilt best . My son chose Kaffe Fassett prints with flowers in blues, for his quilt and there’s nothing girly about him. perhaps it would be a good idea to let your brother choose,,this way you know he will like it. Serafina

I too had to choose a quilt for my brother David. It was his 50th. I made one with a bit of nature and a lot of fabrics – my goal was to use 50 different fabrics (i.e. 50th birthday) I ended up using over 75 different fabrics including some of my hand dyes and one with green peas because we used to grow, shell and eat a LOT of green peas as kids. It turned out a little ‘artsy’ with all the colors nad a sort-of grownup I spy quilt but we both like it. I used up the left over tiny pieces all 408 of them and made a miniature quilt for me only 31cm X 42cm. I would love to show you but can’t figure out how to attach and the thumbprint only shows part of it. Oh well I’m sure your quilt will be exceptional! Since your brother has all those interests you could have so much fun incorporating all of them into the quilt. You know there is fabric for all of those things right? Consider making a smaller – miniature version for yourself it really makes the gift special for both of you. Can’t wait to see it

I like Bachelor quilt # 1 – guys like gemoetric designs but this one is way cool with the blue for the ocean – since he’s an outdoor rugged kind of guy, I think he’ll love it
I’m with you, #3. Flannel will also make it a more out of an out doorsy (not a real word) kind of quilt.
