I am happy to report that Sweetie has been adopted! Here I have spent all this time trying to get her hooked up with so many agencies and exhausted my social media efforts, when all I really needed to do was simply walk the dog through my neighborhood.
The other night I realized I had no food in the house and wanted to walk to get take-out for dinner, so I took Sweetie with me. A woman entering a restaurant saw Sweetie and just fell in love with her. Her name is Kimber and she called me yesterday morning and told me that she very much wanted to adopt Sweetie. We had a long conversation, and last night, armed with a tote of treats, a bag of dog food, six months of heart worm preventative, Sweetie’s medical records and tags, and a Ziploc baggie with a Kong filled with frozen peanut butter, Sweetie and I walked to the same location to meet her new mom. I handed her leash over to Kimber, knelt down and gave Sweetie a hug goodbye. I admit I got really choked up, and on the walk back home alone I felt very wistful yet so happy Sweetie will have a happy life ahead of her.

Thank you for sharing your rescue stories and your ideas for quilters to reach out and support strays. I have printed out all of the responses and have some ideas that I will share with my team. One thing I thought about doing in the meantime is stitching some doggie bandanas that fostered dogs could wear on walks to let passers-by know they are adoptable. Something like this drawing I whipped up this morning…
When I get back from the Quilting Arts TV taping next week, I want to issue an online drive on my blog to make some so we can all drop off at our local shelters. Are you game?

What great news. I’m so happy for Sweetie and you. Obviously, it was meant to be, and a great idea about the doggie bandannas. I’ve got some great dog paw fabric and can embroider in a bright color.
So happy for Sweetie and Kimber! I think the bandanas are a great idea! It might even be funny to make some that say funny things like . . .um . . .well I don’t know. . . Take me home please!! These people are nuts. Or maybe not. 😉 Have a great trip to Cleveland!
What a happy ending (although a bit bittersweet). I would totally be down with making some adoptable bandanas! I could get a bunch of blanks from Dharma and tie dye them with some bright swirly patterns. If I could figure out how to get a silkscreen of the “I’m So Adoptable” text (or team up with a silkscreen expert??) we could get OODLES of these done quickly!!!!

I would love to try making some “Adopt Me” hand embroidered bandanas to help the cause. I have been looking for a new project to further my embroidery skills!

Yay for you and WooHoo! Glad to hear that Sweetie got adopted. I think her buddy, Clarence, might just miss her. Love the photo of them napping. Sweetie must have been starved for companionship.

It’s so good to hear that Sweetie has her own home and family to love! Thank you, Pokey, for loving this sweet dog and for giving her a chance. I think the bandana idea is a great one! It sounds like a good project for my embroidery machine, and I would be happy to help.

This is a sweet story. While everything will probably be great in her new home, I’d encourage you to keep in touch with the adopting family for a couple of months, a time or two, to be sure she is doing well. Once in a while, it just doesn’t work out. Just a word of caution here.
Oh my goodness, yay!!! Yay for you, yay for Sweetie, I’m so happy for both of you! I’d promised that I had one more person I wanted to talk to about adopting Sweetie (specifically my cousin, Mel), and I finally heard back from Mel last night but just didn’t know how to tell you that she had (sadly) declined to adopt Sweetie. But it doesn’t matter now, because Sweetie has found her forever Mom!! 😀
So happy for Sweetie and you! What a great story and I think the bandana idea is a wonderful idea! I’ll look forward to hearing to more.

Well, Sweetie has brought tears to my eyes so many times, I was ready to fly to Houston. I am so happy there is a happy ending. The bandana are a wonderful idea. I know our local POPPS have colored blankets (like a horse blanket) out of a light weight fabric that the adoptables wear at the dog park. Have fun in Cleveland!

You never know, social networking can make a difference. But, good to know walking thru the neighborhood helps. I do know someone that hosts parties, positions the potential adoptee in a visible spot, and traditionally finds really good loving, forever homes from their parties. The point is you have a wonderful heart and are doing the right thing. And, Sweetie now has a good home.

Pokey! Sweetie was lucky to find you! I love the doggie bandanas. I supervise The Rose M Eldridge Senior Center, part of the Norco Parks and Recreation Dept. which hosts a quilting group. The Norco Animal Shelter is part of the Park and Rec Dept too! I see a great opportunity here for seniors to help the Animal Shelter staff find homes for all the cute adoptees! Bandanas coming up!
