I’ve been off the grid for several months as I settle into my new digs in Houston, Texas, and my new job at Quilts, Inc., as Chief Creative Officer. Meet my new colleagues!
I drove to the Lone Star state from Boston around Thanksgiving, traversing across New England, snaking my way through the Great Smoky Mountains, and dropping down the state of Mississippi until I hit I-10 West in a car containing a dog, a cat, a slew of sewing machines, jars of fabric paints, suitcases of clothes and threads, heaps of books, an embarrassing amount of fat quarters stuffed into every spare nook and cranny of my car, and a big bag of corn nuts tucked at my side–my sustenance of choice for road trips. And once I arrived in Houston (in a t-shirt and a pair of shorts…in November), I just tried to do something I don’t do very well: I put myself in park.
A quilter’s instinct is to nest, and the first order of business in Houston was, of course, to make my house a home. It’s a work in progress, and will take me a long while to finish and that’s fine because I am reveling in the process.
Last Fall at Quilt Market, after much cajoling, whining, and prodding, I convinced fabric designer Marcia Derse into selling me this adorable fabric bench upholstered in her fabrics that she had displayed in her booth for Troy Fabrics. Do you see why I wanted it for my living room?
I also bought some fabric stools from a hotel consignment warehouse, paying as little as $25 each for these guys.
With a little TLC and some graphic, bright fabrics, they now look like this:
At that same warehouse I also bought four arm chairs. They looked a little dingy in orange in comparison to my Marcia Derse piece behind them:
So I decided to make them a little more cheerful to play off of her whimsical color scheme:
There is other evidence in my house that a quilter lives here, like the screen-printed hand towels on my oven:
Or Lynn Krawczyk’s adorable fabric owls that we had featured in the latest edition of International Quilt Festival:Quilt Scene. I bought a vintage birdcage and thought this would be a cute way to showcase them at the bottom of my stairs.
In addition to warming up my home with textiles, I decided to cheer it up in other ways, so I adopted a yellow dog.
And I bought a pink bike.
I am back in business. I’m getting settled in my new home and my new job. I am readying for my first International Quilt Festival in Cincinnati next month, and learning how a handful of hardworking and dedicated people put on these wonderful quilt festivals.
Introducing…Maudlin-Free Monday!
I’m launching a way to stave off those Monday blues, quite simply by giving away free stuff. All you have to do is answer a question I pose on Monday and I’ll select a random winner on the Friday afternoon of the same week. So what’s the first batch of goods you could win? How about a few of these Marcia Derse fabrics I recently purchased?
So here’s my first Maudlin-Free Monday question (and I know today is not Monday but I’m doing a giveaway anyway!): What makes you happy when you create? Is it gazing at your inspiration board, solving a design conundrum, finishing a quilt, or looking through your fabric stash?
For me it is the very first moment I walk into my studio and my eyes simply drink in the textures and colors of everything. I think about the possibilities, and just look forward to the creative session I’ll have in there–whether it is just 30 minutes on a week night or a three-hour session on a Sunday morning.
You?
I am in love with that bench…I might have to come steal it some day! I also noticed your dog makes the exact same pose in all your pictures, too cute!!
P.S. Our group picture turned out great!
Amazing that you are doing your own reupholstering! I love what you’ve done so far, and looks like Clarence and Louie like it, too!
So glad to see you blogging again, Pokey! I *love* all that furniture.
when I start creating, I am excited about what will happen. I am not one that maps out in advance — at least not most of the time. When I am doing surface design I just get out the dyes and paints, start printing and wait to see what I get, then continue to manipulate it until I am satisfied or until I am not certain where to take it, then I stop, put it on a wall and look at it until it speaks.
Love the use of colours!
What do I love when I create? That inner peace and contentment.
When I am creating it is an amazing time of watching my thoughts unfold and unfurl on the journal page, in the collage, with the fibers and fabric as I stitch by hand or machine…crochet or knit….something amazing happens when that spark of creativity is allowed to freely flow from the center, soul of my creative self…. it is always a time to celebrate with gratitude for all the ideas that just keep flowing from that well within….
Your upholstery projects are fantastic! Transformation occurring all around!
Kristin
HI i will use your template… i have put all pictures and css on my server and correctet the datas…when i put the html code into ebay…ebay dont show it..it is just the text and the item picture… dont know why can you help me? Regards Marc
I love your chairs and stools! What makes me happy when I create? Getting lost in the process and all the stress of every day life goes away for a few hours.
Whew… finally found how to leave a comment here on your blog! Love everything you did with the amazing fabrics and I’d DIE over that bench! So, what makes me happy when I create? I love silence and watching an idea unfold, as if a piece is being created by itself. The process is what makes me really happy. Trying the “What if…?”
You’re the greatest! JMHO
Very cozy indeed. I like how you use different texture of white in those pillows. My favorite is the one that has ruffle and hand writing print. Very chic!
Welcome back to the world! You have many people who love and care for you and have missed you.
Creative time? It takes a bit of self-cajoling – but once I actually begin the “making” process – whether it is cutting into the fabric, applying the paint, moving things around on the design wall…. it feels so good to be IN the creative process. I have no idea why it is so hard to make myself get there.
Yeah!!! I loves me some you!!! Welcome back. I know, I have missed reading your words.
What I enjoy most? The fact that when I create (like a York Peppermint Patty) a blast of clean air whips through my brain and leaves it empty. Nothing wrong with that!
I have linked my blog list to you and will RSS Feed you too.
YAY!!! So happy you are back online!! And I love Maudlin-free Monday!!
When I create, I love that it strips away all the stresses of life and I often just feel the weight being lifted from my shoulders. It’s the best!
I’m off to put you on my blogroll and in my Google Reader feed list too! 🙂
yeah, welcome back Pokey!! I’ve missed you!! Your house and cool furnishings and fabrics and colors are looking great!! Hope you let us see you studio soon, too…
as for creating, I love that surge of energy when a creative idea comes into my head, and I rush into the studio, to the sewing machine or paints to execute it.
xoxo
WELCOME BACK to blogging Pokey! LOVE all the new furniture pieces and the fabrics you chose to use to revamp them.
For me also, just being in my studio and being with everything I LOVE makes me HAPPY! Fondling my hand-dyed and painted fabrics is a close second…
I get jazzed when I pick out the fabrics, piece a few blocks, and realize I’ve got a killer thing going! It’s nice to have my ideas work out!
I like when I fall in to the flow of creating something and I am able to really connect with my creative source and I love what I have made.
When I create, the one thing that make me the happiest is the journey I take while making something. The finished product is only the tip of the iceberg, Most people don’t understand or see all of the work involved in creating something. The process of making an object is one of the most liberating and joyous adventures anyone can take.
When I create my breathing slows. Time passes, but I don’t realize it. I am happy. What more could a girl want!? Louie looks so tiny and cute. I love how he poses for each photo. Welcome back to the cyber world – you have been missed!
So nice to see you back in print Pokey! Loving the before and after decor pics of the new house, It looks awesome. You trying to get a job on TLC next? lol See you in a couple weeks! xoxo
Welcome Back Stranger! Your home decor is fabulous. It makes me want to be a bit more adventurous in my own home.
My happiest moments of creation are in the beginnings. I love figuring things out and how they should be done. Which means I am a great starter. ; ) Over the years I’ve pushed myself to be a great finisher and I have found that there is great joy in a job well done too!
I love love love those round stools!!!
Yay…it is so great to hear your words again Pokey! And love seeing your home dec. adventures! My favorite part of creating is getting in the zone, where time melts away and my mind opens up to the infinite possibilities on non-rational thought.
Hy Pokey, welcome back!
My happiest moment are when I stop “creating”, do a couple of steps back and look at my work from a distance and think: “I made this!”.
Pokey, your housing projects are fabulous! For me, I am so happy combining and recombining all the colors and textures and dreaming of what they will become.
Love your home and the lovely things you have made from “re-cycled” pieces!! Your creative juices seem to run in overdrive. Not being quite as creative – I will say that I am happiest when I have my sewing room looking like a tornado hit with my stash surrounding me – that inspires me, and I am happiest when I am in contact with my hands wrists deep in fabric!!
I love when unexpected fabrics are pieced together and create a vibrant visual effect. One of the best compliments I have received was my unexpected sense of color.
Pokey! Welcome back to the blog-o-sphere! OMG those chairs are FANTASTIC! Did you re-upholster them yourself? I’m amazed at how quickly you’ve made your new house a home on top of all you must be doing getting up to speed in your new job.
I hope you get your studio all organized and ready for work – I love walking into mine when it is neat and tidy -> it is so inspiring to know I’ve got that beautiful little space all for creating! 🙂
I love to pile fabric all around me & start sketching on graph paper…. and colored pencils! They make me happy too…
Your new home looks lovely. Welcome to Texas!
I hope you like Texas. I love getting into the sewing room with an idea in my head and then actually getting to see if the idea works. Sometime they do and sometimes the don’t but either way it is fun getting to try.
You are so right, Rosie. They may look calm in pictures but nobody knows the pain in their hearts standing there wondering their next step in helping their gay family members. Ironic that cowards are standing up as champions to persecute those who are truly brave indeed.
zegt:Bah, wat vreselijk!! Die zielige Bo en wat verdrietig voor jullie ((Ik hoop dat hij rustig heen is gegaan.Heel veel sterkte voor jullie!XXXXXXXXXXXXMiek
Congrats on well… everything! 🙂
The happiest part of creating for me is all of it. lol I love the part where I’m thinking and dreaming and planning and drawing; and I love the part where I’m making patterns and pulling fabrics, and I love the part when I’m putting it all together, and I love the quilting part! the only part I don’t like is the binding or facing. *bleh*
Love the way your home is coming together and signed up to have your updates emailed to my inbox!
I love the beginnings of creating…and when I successfully solve a problem!!!
I love when everything comes together just the way I want it to.
Love the furniture!
Welcome to Houston! I’m an H-town girl that would love to win some fabric!!
I love the way the house is evolving. When I create, I love finding the perfect fabric to execute my idea hiding right there in my stash.
Hi Pokey! Great to see you out and about.
I love the sense of freedom entering my studio brings. I’m free to be the me I choose to be. What fun!
what makes me happy when creating is that my best pals are there with me…we share and learn and experiment together…laughing and having a wonderful time…and then 6 hours have passed….lol
You have been busy! I love all of your new creations and the lovely creations of others you have! Love Louie in the bike basket!!
I love when I’m doing some spontaneous creations and it is all going so smoothly and it is lots of fun!
I love taking my design on paper and start to find colours that make it come alive!
When I begin a new project, not quite sure where the journey will take me, I let it speak and guide me to the unknown. It’s like a dance with me following the beat and yet when it all comes together a moment of relaxation comes all over me.
what makes me happy when creating is music and the view of the trees in my yard. this allows me to be reflective as a work on projects.
Congratulations on your new home – and your new job. You’ve gotten a lot accomplished in a short period. I feel happy and centered when I actually get to touch fabric – or sew someway. It literally does calm me down a lot. i don’t like to walk away from a project when there is some sort of negative that needs to be done – like unsewing, filling a bobbin – anything that seems like a negative to the process.
What makes me happy is finding a great craft/quilt book and trying something new. My creative mind is new and fresh and my work is simple and a work in progress. When I’m done with a project I take a picture and share it with my sister who encourages me. I am so happy my husband bought me a sewing machine, sewing is my new found passion I didn’t even know was in me.
P.S welcome to Texas and your chairs are great 🙂
In process of making a qilt, I love the planning, especially when working with a theme, letting all the ideas run, then narrowing down, picking and choosing elements, planning the layout. I love choosing the fabrics (or choosing to alter the fabrics) to make them fit my plans.
Welcome back…I agree, lots of us have been waiting for your return!
I’m happiest during the creative process when I reach the point where I see the end, the conclusion the resolution. I often start small projects so I can experiment with techniques. But then I get stumped for what to do next with those pieces, so I lay them aside. Then one sunny Sunday morning I walk into my studio, turn on the radio and some how I am able to pull those pieces together to build a work of art that someone is now enjoying on the wall of their home.
The enjoyment of letting myself be free to try something new and being wowed if it turns out fabulous and willing to give it another try if the results are not so great!
Watching the item being created come to ‘life’, and finishing it ~ a fabulous feeling!
Welcome to Texas! I hope you’re enjoying it! What makes me happy is being with all my fabric- I jut love rediscovering it after time away. I also love seeing an idea in my mind come into being in fabric, I find it very satisfying to have a tangible result to my inner thoughts.
Thanks for offering the giveaway!
I had no idea you were moving, where to next?I enjoy apt living. Now I’m at my parent’s house, but apt living in Mpls is MUCH different from NYC. As you can imagine.I think you have done so well with all of this. Your optimism is contagious!
When I create, what makes me happy is finally deciding that I have the right fabric for the pattern I’ve selected/created. It may take 500 visits to the quilt shop or the online shops, but that’s all part of the fun!
Congratulations on everything! Very exciting:)
I love the process of whatever it is I’m working on. A good result is always nice, too:)
Shiver me timbers, them’s some great information.
Glad you’re back online ! Thank you for the giveaway. I am happiest creating when I get into the zen zone … time passes unknowingly, in the moment, worries far away.
I’m happiest when I contemplate the “next” project.
When I walk into my sewing room I am immediately greeted by lots of memories of past projects and especially sweet thoughts of my mom. I inherited all of my mom’s fabric and quilt books. It makes me feel very close to her to spend the day going through books and fabrics to choose the next project. It is a place I long for and look forward to going to each weekend and occasionally during the week.
I’m happiest when I “see it” on my design wall.
Thanks for the chance to win that GORGEOUS fabric!
That is completely understandable.I’ve been contemplating doing this as well, but was wondering how you approached those specific hurdles.I’m not a lawyer, but the OPC specs are published under the RCL (never heard of it) but it states “under the RCL your changes, bug fixes, extensions, etc. must be made available to the community.” I figure the term “community” ties the source and changes back to foundation members. If we do tackle this, I would hope to make it official (as Utgard is on the OPC website) but also be able to keep it open-source.Thank you for your feedback!
I am happiest when the quilt is finished. I worry all along the way that it won’t look likw anything and I am always happy when my quilt turns out better than I executed.
I love it when I sit down and all my paints and fabric are just waiting for me to start, I know I’m in heaven.
Good luck on your new home and job. Love everything you’ve done to your furnishing.
You know, color makes me happy. Whether it’s fabric, paint, ink, or colored pencils… Just having a variety of colors in my hands and organizing them into an eye pleasing piece of artwork. The unknown, planning, perseverance, and accomplishment makes me happy too…regardless if the result is good or not. I guess they call that “learning”!
Your new place is looking cool, Pokey! Love all the fabrics!
I love that feeling when it all comes together and looks better then I ever could have guessed it would.
Thanks for the reply’s yesterday guys.. Remember this is where you speak your mind, right here on the BLOG. If you want to be heard please comment here for the whole staff and gym to see. Thanks as always, we love you all… And I think only about 90 of you owe me burpees! Cheers …
What makes the most happiest is being able to give it away and see their eyes light up when they see the present. You know all the hard work and sometimes ripping is worth it.
I love the moment when what I envisioned starts to become a reality.
What makes me happy is completing projects…and watching myself and others grow as sewers!
Playing with colour makes me happy when I create!
Would love to win those beautiful fabrics!
Color! When I am creating, it’s the color that puts me in Heaven!
What makes me happy is the seeing the end result of a vision and imagination. I totally surprise myself at times. I love making things and giving them to others.
The friendship and joy shared with others who also have a passion for creativity. Whether they receive the quilts or make them.
Welcome to Houston! Leave the flip-flops & shorts unpacked…practically year-round attire for SE TX!
What makes me happy is how calm & peaceful I feel surrounded by my “opportunities”…a room full of possibilities ready for my whimsy to strike! It’s especially gratifying when it all comes together exactly as I imagined it!
I like the adventure of creating things. I am new at quilting, but already love putting colors together to see how they turn out. It is so relaxing and fun.
It makes me happy just to be in my special room doing the things I love.
What makes me happy is the surprise of seeing what I have dreamed in my head come alive in my hands. I never believe I am creative but then it happens. what a blessing.
It’s the process that I enjoy the most.. not the deciding what to do or finishing up but the in between bits of using the materials rather than planning to use them. Of course, having a lot of stuff to choose from helps as well.
I love seeing all of those little pieces of fabric transform into something spectacular then adding free motion quilting to “put the icing on the cake”.
I love to just sit in my confide chair in my sewing room and stare at all my fabric. Starting a new project is the most fun thing to do in the quilting project. Pulling out fabrics to see what works!
Every aspect of the creating makes me happy. The designing, the fabric choices, seeing the quilt top come together, then how the quilting threads alter the surface, completing the binding and putting on the label. The best part is the gifting of the quilt.
I love playing with fabric and planning a project.
Congratulations and good luck, Pokey! I just learned about your new position, and I truly wish you the best!
I can create better when I have been outside in the woods and mountains recently. I also need to have great music in the background!
Love that Louie and the pink bike!
I love the bench, and your beautiful redecorating of the chairs, great use of pattern and color. 🙂
I love the artistic playing with color, pattern and texture to create quilts (and other things) in a manner that is unique and reflects me. I love going thru the fabric stash seeing what I have collected (both from here at home in the US and all around the world), melding them into an treasured quilt to pass on (eventually) to my children. The freedom to express myself creatively thru fabric, color, pattern resulting in an one of a kind fabric art.
That fact that I can!!! For most of my life I did not consider myself a creative person. That last several years exploring quilting arts with my local friends has convinced me otherwise. I AM creative!!!!
I just saw that my name is incorrectly spelled in the original post 🙁 so I wanted to correct it. I would love to win the fabric, after all a girl can never have too much fabric to play with :).
why I feel so happy???? a hundred yrs ago, or so it seems, when I was in grad school for my masters in social work, I had a wise woman tell me, if you work with things, play with people ; if you work with people, play with things, and you will always have balance in your life – ir is still true – especially with quilting – after talk talk talking all day, I go into my sewing room and silently look and touch all the pretties- I feel all the noise and drama slip away – and I can enjoy the silence and drama of Marcia’s fabrics – which I JUST discovered this week in florida – only to find out that my sister Kerry in Va is good friends with Stevii, who is good friends with Marcia – so, is that like 6 degrees of separation?? I think you need to let me close my circle by sending Marcia’s fabric to ME!!!!especially since I USED to live in Ohio
From one Houstonian to another, welcome home! I love getting lost in the process, letting the colors, the textures, the possible patterns wash over me until I’m not even aware of anything happening around me. I love putting one color next to the other and seeing both come alive, watching shapes nestle into each other and make new shapes. Thanks for the fabric offer!
Hi Pokey! I love the feeling that anything is possible, no limits and in every exploration there will be things learned, insights and inspirations for the next creative exploration. I grew up in a sewing family and loved, loved, loved going to Vogue Fabrics in Evanston, IL with my Grandmother. I’m looking forward to taking my grandchildren fabric shopping soon.
I LOVE being a finisher. The great TA-DA! at the end of a project. No more contemplating color and design. . . I can then be on to something new.
Congratulations on making it to Texas! I love organizing everything that I need to start a project!
For me it starts with the idea of “I wonder” and then the anticipation sets in as I look for the right things and then I try to hold in my excitement when something actually goes together and looks great. The whole process starts over as I add more, change things up in my own design or follow the directions exactly and it works. I actually feel proud when I create something that is wonderful and made with my two hands. It all makes me happy and then I start something new and it happens again. 🙂
What makes me the happiest is uninterupted time in my studio with some cool jazz vocal singers on the Bose – sun shinning in the windows and piles of fabric to create with. My mind can feel free top create.
I would be happy with more fabric too.
Congrats on your new job and home. I’ve done some reupholstering myself and had great fun. In answer to your question — I love the “me” time when I’m creating, getting excited to see the first finished block – then the top. I get lost in my sewing and destressing. To win some free fabric would be great!
Just getting to DO the creative process…I spent 25 years in the corporate world – dedicating myself to my work. I’ve been laid off for more than a year now, and every moment I’ve spent creating has been an absolute joy. All the sewing, painting and glue-ing I’d put off is getting done. I’ve never been happier –
My favorite part of any quilt is the binding. Not only because it means I’m nearly finished, but it is such a satisfying process.
My favorite part of the whole process is feeling the fabric, Seriously, first I look I suppose, at the color and texture, but really, once I feel a fabric I know if I will use it or not. Then while cutting, sewing, quilting, it is just feeling how the fabric feels, how it feels going through the machine, or how the needle slides in and out… I walk through the fabric store and touch just about every fabric that I can! I love to hand quilt and sometimes with the fabric in the frame I will just sit and feel the seams and touch the quilt before I start to quilt. It seems to help me know the quilt better and how I will quilt it, where the seams are and how they lay.
I love watching a project develop. I start with an idea and it evolves. Sometimes it works out, sometimes not so much. But each time it’s a learning process and it makes me happy!
I love looking at color combinations, shapes and possibilities for the finished project. I always envision the quilt recipient as I cut and sew.
I love the way the process is all consuming, time passes so quickly and no difficult decisions to make, just go with the flow.
I am happiest when selecting fabrics for my next quilt. I love the colors and textures. Sometimes I just put swatches on my design wall and look at them to help with the decision making process.
I love color and being creative. What makes me happy is walking into my sewing room and being fortunate to see all my beautiful fabric. I am blessed that I will soon be able to create full time.
I love the peace and contentment I feel when I sit down and draft up a new pattern… and love the colors make me feel as I sift through fabrics selecting just which pieces I’ll incorporate into the piece, and I love the sense of accomplishment as block after block come to life on the project wall. 🙂 Welcome back… LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your house and that there is no doubt a fabric artist lives there.
I just like creating new stuff.
What makes me the most happy is watching the development of a project. It may not come out anything like I first envisioned it but that is the mystery and wonder of creation. Usually the resulting product is so much better than the planned piece.
I simply love being “inside” my project! That feeling of being consumed by it and being able to bask in it is soooo delicious! Even though I am usually thinking of other project possibilities, that time of total involvement with the current project is so good I don’t want it to end! but then it does, but wait….there’s more! I get to go there again and again! Yes, I admit it, I’m a glutton!
I am happy when I create because I made it myself. Half of what I create is for others and it makes me happy to know they are happy to have an item created just for them!
I enjoy looking thru my fabric stash when a new idea hits me or I find something on blogland I have to try out. I have a rather large stash of fabric, organized in color families and I never tire of the process of choosing what might be just right for a particular project.
The “happy” starts when I start pulling fabric and all the other fun stuff and it all comes together. There’s no way to describe that special feeling :).
Glad to see you online and your house is way cool!
I love to watch a project grow and develop on my design wall.
Welcome to Texas.
Playing with fabrics is what makes me happy. When I say to myself…That’s it, that’s the one.” happy, happy, happy! Glad to see you are all settled. Enjoy!
Walking into my space just makes me happy especially when I have lots of projects in the works. Fabric dyeing ranks a close second including the ironing of crisp new colors just for me!
Enjoy the settling in process.
The thing that makes me happy when I create is the adventure in techniques I go on to make a piece happen. I have a vision so I pull out fabric, embellishments, paints and tools. I just play until my dream happens. I often come up with several cool little samples along the way that end up in other projects later. New to a career as a fibre artist – every moment in my studio is like a dream come true!
It’s that “ta da” moment when everything comes together, becomes a real vision in my mind. Since I’m a garment maker, it’s when I pile all the trims and notions and threads on top of a fabric and up pops a memory of something I ripped out of a magazine years ago, as if it were right in front of me. I don’t answer the door or phone, barely stop to eat, and just focus until the dream is reality. Ta da!
I love how creating makes time disappear and I’m in the flow of colors, textures, ideas and imagination.
It’s that every project takes you to places you never envisioned initially, allows you to make changes in color, textures and/or design as needed, and becomes more beautiful than you imagined!
What makes me happy when I create, is seeing a vision become reality. I love the surprises that come along for the ride, when a fabric I wasn’t expecting really sets off the rest of the project, or a color I hadn’t planned weaves its way in. It’s the challenge to see if I can produce my fantasy. The process, the fabrics, the colors, the design, it all feeds my soul and makes me happy.
What does it for me is just seeing an idea come to fruition – finishing. 🙂 SUCH satisfaction. Ahhhhh! So I guess the anticipation of that moment drives me. 🙂
Hm. Glad your back talking to your friends and fans. I’m happiest when I’m finally in the middle part of the creative process. Its the point where I’m done procrastinating and actually see that I can do something creative. Also, I love that sense of accomplishing the beginnings and can see the end around that next curve or two but I haven’t finished the problem solving yet.
My biggest joy is the last quilt I did. It turned out so much like my vision that it just filled me up, like quenching a thirst! It goes to Paducah and I’m glad others will get to see it but it needs no ribbon to satisfy the soul.
I love being a room of my own where I can decide what to do based only on what I feel like at the moment. It is a haven and I am refreshed even if it is only for a short fifteen minute stint or an all day sewing fest.
What makes me happy when I create? A whole afternoon free to play and a project that is going well!
welcome back to the blogosphere! so nice to read about your adventures again! and oh my…your new digs look fabulous! the Sex and the City girls would approve…
It looks like you’re well on your way to settling in!
Auditioning fabrics and color combinations is what really appeals to me – the chance to create visual effects
best wishes for your new home/job!
When I create I cn tak my ideas and see if they look as good as I think they will. It strips away the pressures of life. (Sometimes it might bring new pressure if things are not working as I think they should). A wise lady once told me you should do something creative every day
I get the giggles when I lay the blocks on my living room floor and stand on the stairs looking down. Getting a feel for what is happening and seeing the piece come together makes me so excited! The view from above makes it all so real.
I am in the best shape to create when I get to sew all nite. often put blocks on the design board, take a photo, print out..wait a while, dring another cup of coffee. rearrange blocks, another photo..This goes on for a while..then I compare photos and decide what I want to do. I Love the feel of finishing a project and seeing the reaction of my family when they admire it..
Im in MY best shape when I dont have to work 6 days a week – but it keep us stocked with dog food – 40 lbs every 10 days — and me with fabric!
What makes me happy is thinking about the joy on the face of the recipient of whatever I’m working on (almost always gifts). It’s why I quilt. I tend to design my own quilts and not use patterns, so it’s also fun seeing my ideas come alive.
