It’s time for my second Maudlin-Free Monday giveaway (and yes, I realize it is Tuesday, but are we really going to quibble about this when I’m giving away free fabric?)
A little bit about this second batch of fabric I am giving away…
I have a huge love for painting, dyeing, stamping, stenciling, screening, and printing fabric in my free time, and in the summer of 2010 my (then future) colleagues at Quilts, Inc., invited me to come to La Grange, Texas–the same town as the new Texas Quilt Museum–to play with them and teach them some of my favorite surface design techniques.
We dyed fabric:
We did deconstructed screen printing:
And oohed and aaahed at the results:
And oohed and ached and jumped for joy as they flapped dry in the Texas wind…
We also played with Thermofax screen printing:
And yes, we played until the cows came home.
I have learned that a team that works and plays together, stays together!
Want to win some fabric?
All you need to do is answer the following question and I’ll choose a winner randomly this upcoming Friday.
My Question: We all love to learn new quilt techniques. In fact, in case you might have missed it, we have a quick online survey that we would LOVE for you to take to help us offer classes you want at International Quilt Festival.
But back to my question: What is the one thing you want to learn how to do right now?
For me, I want to be brave enough to try bobbin embroidery. I recently met with Ellen Anne Eddy and she made it look so easy (and fun)! So that is next on my list. What about you?
I’m a new quilter, so what I want to do right now is the next step in my current quilt — adding borders.
I want to learn to free motion quilt like the pros!
I want to learn how to burn my own silk screens. Thermofax machines seem to be expensive or non-existent. So, I thought I would go back to the good old fashioned way of making my own screens. Well, that is the thinking today. Tomorrow may be carving blocks or hand painting. Hummingbird mind is a dangerous thing – flitting from one pretty technique to the next! 🙂
I have several unfinished quilt tops. I never know how to quilt them. So my UFO pile gets bigger. I want help.
I would like to learn some of the surface design techniques you shared here.
I want to learn how to design, dye or print my own fabric. Especially using non-cotton fabrics such as silk, ???.
Would love to learn gel printing.
Hi Pokey! Personally, I want to learn more about using Mixed Media involving Art Quilts, incorporating papers, fabric, paints, etc into one project.
I think it would be fun to learn more about layered journaling. And using silk more. I have not tried much of that. Thank you for the opportunity to win.
I want to improve my free machining to outline screenprints etc.
Hi! I really would love to learn machine applique techniques.
Thanks for the chance to win.
Right this minute, I wanna know what the heck deconstructed silk screening is. Even after a friend explained it to me, showing me something she had done, I still couldn’t wrap my brain around it.
Learning how to clean the goop out of the tension disks in my machines without taking it in for service would be nice too…
btw – tell Ruth “hi” for me. She probably doesn’t remember me, but she was a joy to work with back in the days when I was helping with the Quilters S.O.S. project.
I would like to learn how to add more designs/circles/other small blocks to the top of my quilts to make them look more arty. I want to make my quilts “pop”.
You have inspired me to get the silk screens that have been living under my bed for years out to do some printing fabric, but I want to learn now about removing color from fabric…. reductive process & can it work in reverse with a the shibori dying process?
Bobbin work …. I have seen it done but have not tried it yet. What makes a bobbin work type of embellishment successful?
I want to learn how to play more with PSE and actually print something on fabric and make something special with it ! 🙂
There are so many things that I want to learn right NOW! But if I had to choose…thread painting! Thanks!
My greatest desire is to be able to do free motion quilting on the machine that looks like what I picture in my mind and sketches….and consistently accomplish this with my projects,
I hate “messing” with the bobbin, but bobbin work sounds interesting.
I would like to learn how to print on fabric. I love the look of handdyed and hand printed fabric. I would like to know all the secrets. Thanks
I would love to learn how to screen print on fabric. I love the look of hand-dyed and hand-printed fabrics. thanks
I want to learn how to thoughtfully and effectively combine free motion quilting motifs with fabric collage and hand embroidery. I’m always working on this — but sometimes I feel like I’ve got too much of one thing and not enough of the other.
I’d love to learn how to make a fabric book. I love adding fabric to my “paper” projjects and pages, but love the feel of a good fabric book! Linda
I’d love to learn how to make simple clothing that fits ME.
I want to learn about design and composition so my projects look interesting with lots of details but having it look like it all belongs. I guess I would like to be able to design something that has variety and cohesiveness at the same time.
I am dying to do pictorial art quilts, but am not feeling confident about how to do it and what techniques to use. I have one in mind featuring the Colorado Street Bridge in my hometown of Pasadena!
EASY machine quilting – nothing fancy. I have a hand-me-down Bernina (a gift from my sister when she up-graded) I just want to learn something beside a “stitch in the ditch” method. I’m loving your stuff!
I’d like to be more confident with free motion quilting 🙂
I would love to learn how to do some sun printing on fabric…I’m moving to Houston from Calgary and will have loads of time to quilt but I want to be able to sun print, dye my own fabrics (another new thing for me) and my darlin Hubby got me a felting machine a couple of years ago and I would LOVE to learn how to use it! Those are my big three…. they say good things come in threes….and what can beat anything that hangs off of a good art project on its own or off of a good quilting day/week/month….
Ideas for incorporating surface embellishment — beading, buttons, fibers, mylar candy wrappers ………. , and techniques for getting them to stay in place.
I would like to have a go at screen printing. I have a couple of books on the technique but not been game to take the plunge yet. Thanks for the chance to win your gorgeous fabric.
Just help me free the artist within. Get me to my machine or paints more readily. Maybe how to work while walking the dogs? I’m joking of course. But we can all use help with getting over the first hurdle, no matter what the technique. I guess I’m asking for one of those crafts/sewing evangelists to boost our spirits and free ourselves to trust our own creative spark.
Great photo of all of you at your workshop! I was looking for Karey and there she was!
To be proficient at free motion quilting and thread painting.
I’m love to learn how to do Screen Printing, it looks like so much fun.
A class in using things already in your kitchen, garage or that catch- all drawer. I get frustrated when I see great new ideas but find I need to buy $$$$ worth of
products to try a new technique. ( although I realize companies pay to have their
products mentioned) 🙂
I want to have a chance to play with a teacher using paints that are available to most people. I would like to print and be able to do surface design. Too mant ideas and so little time.
Torn between “Bobbin Work” and “Thread Painting”…… Basically I just want to start using up some of my pretty threads so I don’t feel like such a Hoarder!! LOL
I would like to learn all about long-arm quilting – from loading the quilt to quilting to maintaining the machine.
I’m with you and would love to learn bobbin work. I love the textures and effects you can achieve!
I want to learn to monoprint fabrics!
I want to learn to put in a simple zipper – so I can make all the bags I have in my head.
Effectively apply metalic accents to my silk scarves and other fabrics.
I want to take a 2 day workshop in screen printing!
That was pretty specific, Jane! Not one day, or three….TWO DAY WORKSHOP. Weee! 😉
I want to learn how to use encaustic with textile!
Learn more fabric dyeing and printing techniques.
I want to dye my own fabric! 😀
I would like to learn how to do free motion quilting and like it when I’m done :o)
I’d like to learn more about using several techniques when making a quilt top… such as applique`, plus piecing, plus paper piecing just to name a few. I think mixing things up makes for a great quilt.
My pal and I are playing each weekend with dyeing…experimenting with peoples techniques…and honing our own…
I’d love to learn screen printing, especially deconstructed screen printing, with dyes! And I’d love to win this fabric stash to spur me on!!
My big desire is to learn how to do free motion quilting.
I want to learn how to do free motion feathers on my home sewing machine.
The correct way to applique.
I would love to takes class on machine quilting. I want a teacher to show me all steps from piecing, to batting, to boarders, to basting and machine quilting. I have the quilting bug. 🙂 I’m hoping this fall Houston will have a class for me 😀
Sorry typo I ment take a class. 🙂
I have an immediate need to make my own rubbing plate(s) of iris plants with cardboard and glue gel. I think it will work (tracing paper wasn’t strong enough to make the glue stand up). I want to put “ghost” irises in the border I’m working on for a round robin, just a hint of shape, probably with pastel, to extend the images in the central panel. I’ve used a similar idea before with a commercial rubbing plate that worked for that application, but now need a design that I can’t find elsewhere. That’s this week’s investigation! Surface design is what makes my mind fizz; I love it.
I want to learn how to manage my time and become more efficient with the time I have and get more projects completed.
I want to learn how to FINISH a quilt! I have several that are ready to be quilted and I just get stuck on the quilting design. But other than that, I really want to learn how to get back to quilting now that I have a child. It’s been 4 1/2 years and I miss it so! I started just today on a block, just a block, of a neat design- Japanese X and + block and I hope to learn the ability to work in very small chunks of time instead of my preferred uninterrupted blocks of hours and hours late into the night. So that’s what I want to learn! Thanks for the giveaway- the fabrics look great and I’ll have to check out the museum- its not too far from me in Austin.
I would love learn how to dye my fabric as free as that design!
I’m new to quilting. I’d love to learn free-motion quilting. 🙂
I would like the opportunity to learn how to install a (large) quilt top, batting, backing onto a longarm machine, quilt the quilt on it, and decide if having a longarm is a good idea. I think I’m going to look into a 2-day workshop that allows use of their machines. I don’t want to buy one until I’m sure I would like it!
I would like to learn how to use a needle felting machine. I just love the look, colors and texture you can create with it. I think my creativity would explode if I started to play with it.
I’d love to make some batik fabrics for the first time. I only buy batiks, hand dyes and paint and dye my own fabrics. I even have all the supplies to do it and I collect interesting shaped objects to use as wax stamps. I’ve just never taken a day to go for it. That’s what I would love to try next.
I want to learn to machine quilt. Currently everything is hand quilted, but for smaller quicker projects the machine would be nice.

My grandma ,who passed away when my mom was little, knew how to make the most exquisite drawn thread embroidery, like lace,. That’s what I want to learn .It would be a connection to someone who is a part of me that I never got to meet.

First up on my T-=Do List is learning paper piecing! I want to make those wonderfully intricate blocks with perfect seams and points!! Thanks for the chance to win!!
Hey Pokey,
Right now I am really into hand embroidery and using it for art Quilts and in art journals. I am just beginning to do this specialized sewing and so I take a simple design and work until I can master it! It all began two years ago when I sewed my daughter an apron for Christmas. It had a pretty Poinsettia on it, printed on the fabric, but I wanted to actually hand sew the flowers and leaves. It has exploded since then with my love of art journals entering into the picture as well. Thanks for the chance to win. ~Gin~
