It’s time for my second Maudlin-Free Monday giveaway (and yes, I realize it is Tuesday, but are we really going to quibble about this when I’m giving away free fabric?)
A little bit about this second batch of fabric I am giving away…
I have a huge love for painting, dyeing, stamping, stenciling, screening, and printing fabric in my free time, and in the summer of 2010 my (then future) colleagues at Quilts, Inc., invited me to come to La Grange, Texas–the same town as the new Texas Quilt Museum–to play with them and teach them some of my favorite surface design techniques.

I want to learn how to burn my own silk screens. Thermofax machines seem to be expensive or non-existent. So, I thought I would go back to the good old fashioned way of making my own screens. Well, that is the thinking today. Tomorrow may be carving blocks or hand painting. Hummingbird mind is a dangerous thing – flitting from one pretty technique to the next! 🙂
I have several unfinished quilt tops. I never know how to quilt them. So my UFO pile gets bigger. I want help.

Right this minute, I wanna know what the heck deconstructed silk screening is. Even after a friend explained it to me, showing me something she had done, I still couldn’t wrap my brain around it.

I would love to learn how to do some sun printing on fabric…I’m moving to Houston from Calgary and will have loads of time to quilt but I want to be able to sun print, dye my own fabrics (another new thing for me) and my darlin Hubby got me a felting machine a couple of years ago and I would LOVE to learn how to use it! Those are my big three…. they say good things come in threes….and what can beat anything that hangs off of a good art project on its own or off of a good quilting day/week/month….

I have an immediate need to make my own rubbing plate(s) of iris plants with cardboard and glue gel. I think it will work (tracing paper wasn’t strong enough to make the glue stand up). I want to put “ghost” irises in the border I’m working on for a round robin, just a hint of shape, probably with pastel, to extend the images in the central panel. I’ve used a similar idea before with a commercial rubbing plate that worked for that application, but now need a design that I can’t find elsewhere. That’s this week’s investigation! Surface design is what makes my mind fizz; I love it.

I want to learn how to FINISH a quilt! I have several that are ready to be quilted and I just get stuck on the quilting design. But other than that, I really want to learn how to get back to quilting now that I have a child. It’s been 4 1/2 years and I miss it so! I started just today on a block, just a block, of a neat design- Japanese X and + block and I hope to learn the ability to work in very small chunks of time instead of my preferred uninterrupted blocks of hours and hours late into the night. I would like the opportunity to learn how to install a (large) quilt top, batting, backing onto a longarm machine, quilt the quilt on it, and decide if having a longarm is a good idea. I think I’m going to look into a 2-day workshop that allows use of their machines. I don’t want to buy one until I’m sure I would like it!
I would like to learn how to use a needle felting machine. I just love the look, colors and texture you can create with it. I think my creativity would explode if I started to play with it.
I’d love to make some batik fabrics for the first time. I only buy batiks, hand dyes and paint and dye my own fabrics. I even have all the supplies to do it and I collect interesting shaped objects to use as wax stamps. I’ve just never taken a day to go for it. That’s what I would love to try next.

Right now I am really into hand embroidery and using it for art Quilts and in art journals. I am just beginning to do this specialized sewing and so I take a simple design and work until I can master it! It all began two years ago when I sewed my daughter an apron for Christmas. It had a pretty Poinsettia on it, printed on the fabric, but I wanted to actually hand sew the flowers and leaves. Hi, I have just started dyeing my fabric, so Im going to try to go and learn how to dye with some wax, and screen painting my fabric. even try to paint on it, for the quilt that I may be working on. I found a company that has all the stuff to do these things, and so Im going to try one after the other. .This is something that I have never done, but with their products and telling you how to do it, Im jumping in head first as I do on anything I start that is new to me. I am creating a series of landscape CQ blocks for the Crazly Quilt Journal Project 2012. I want to learn some great way of putting them together in an awesome fabric journal so that they don’t have to sit in a drawer somewhere forever. I intend to add to them and to create another series of some type next year. Two things, really, at least for this week, general and specific: Learn to not over-think, just take an idea and start to play with it. (I kill many great ideas that way.) And learn to hand embellish with yarn/ribbon/thread for dimension. I love the look of hand work and the slow pace is a nice balance in the day.
