UPDATE! Congratulations to Judith Reynolds! Please email me your shipping address to pokeyb@quilts.com, and I will ship the fabrics to you!
And everyone, thanks for responding and letting me know what you are quilting these days!
Aaaaah, it’s Friday! Weekend forecast calls for several dog walks, a manicure, a Houston Modern Quilt Guild meeting, a Sunday bike ride, quilting, and sunny skies with temps in the mid-90s.
I am also going to play with Khaleesi, my newest quilt studio pet as I want to bond with her more before I leave Monday for Long Beach for International Quilt Festival next week.
Since it is Friday, it’s time to give away some free fabric, and in honor of my little tabby…
I thought to give away some orange fabric!
Free Fabric Friday Question
My question to you on this lovely Friday afternoon has to do with wanting to know what kind of quilting you are doing nowadays. I, of course, love art quilting and surface design work, but right now I find myself making lots of small projects, and wanting to make finished quilted throws that I can colorfully stack in my console table behind my family room sofa. So I guess I am making lots of scrap quilts, and want to make some modern quilt-type quilts, too.
What about you? What kinds of quilting activities are you doing right now or want to explore? Leave a comment and I will randomly choose a winner tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon and post the winner in this blog.
Have a great weekend!
Hi Pokey,
Your weekend sounds like fun. Mine includes a pedicure too, some lovely warm weather, a walk or too, one ice cream, fabric dyeing and some quilting. I’ve been going back to basics in some ways; making log cabin blocks in whites, creams, different fabrics, different textures different fabric contents. Then once the quilt is fully assembled and fully quilted, and before it gets the binding on … it gets put into a vat of dye. The different fabrics and textures take the dye in different ways, and the results are very interesting. I finished one already, and am working on my second one, this time using wonky sort-of log cabin blocks.
Because I have been dyeing my own fabrics lately, I needed to find a way to use some of them, so I’ve been working on some simple landscapes with fabric and added paint. I have made three so far, and they are so addictive, I can see many more in my future.
Lovely orange fabricss!! Thanks for the opportunity to win.
Best regards, Ana
I’m making a wonky star log cabin in black and whites – a modern twist of a classic block! Thanks for the generous giveaway – I’d love to win these beautiful fabrics!
Khaleesi is so sweet! I’m headed home early (Yippee!) I’ve been working on several small wall hangings, and this weekend I’ll bind them and mount them a la Carol Ann Waugh., I have piles of wonky 9-patch blocks which need to go on the design wall to see if I need more , or if I can start sewing the top together and finally I have plans to make seat covers for my car, but first I have to try and figure out what fabrics I could use that won’t fade in the summer sun.
Enjoy the weekend!

I’ve got a LAUNDRY list of projects — a special woodpecker lap quilt for my girlfriend who has colon cancer (we picked the woodpacker as our healing totem); kitchen items like appliance covers and table runners and placemats; art quilts, natch; covers for pillows to they can look different with the seasons; etc. I can probably come up with more. I’m so glad you have a kitty! I love kitties!
Since this heat wave has me “trapped” at home almost like a winter blizzard!! I have been pulling out my UFO’s and trying to finish some so far this week I have finished one, complete with binding and label!!
In cleaning out and reorganizing my sewing studio I have found many small remnants of projects as well as unused embellishments. I have taken these and made 11 small quilts…about 9″ x 12″ each. Six are being donated to Ami Simms’ AAQI project for auction, one became a challenge for my mini group to experiment with using silk and 4 became a series of color- by- season. The joy is in the creating…not always in the keeping! The challenge for me is taking random things and put them together in an exciting way as well as working in a small format. I’m lovin’ it and see more in my future! Posting on my FB page and getting great reviews!
I’m making Baby quilts
I want to make some quilts with some big, bold blocks and lots of negative space.
I’m working on a small dimensional wall hanging and trying out some different techniques while I’m at it. I don’t feel like working on big projects now. But I am dreaming and scheming my next one…
So glad the kitty got a good home; have fun with her!
Ooooh, I love the orange fabrics! I’ve been making pieced quilts and thought I would take a break and go back to art quilts for awhile. But I went to a couple of local shops today and bought two charm packs … Sweetwater Mama Said Sew and Joy by Kate Spain. I’m looking through my patterns and think I’m ready to try triangles with one of the charm packs tomorrow!
I am with my son at the Aquarium of the Pacific, across the street from the Long Beach Convention Center – cant wait for the quilt show next week! I am currently working on a kind of pictorial quilt for my elderly dad, a lifelong model airplane hobbyist. It features his beloved planes in the setting of an old gym, where his club has its weekly meetings. A labor of love!
I have some leftover blocks in orange, red and yellow. I want to make a cover for my sewing machine but the colours suit the kitchen. The sewing room doesn’t really have a colour scheme so those blocks are OK, too. I think I will use some gauzy fabrics to make a skirt for the wire cart in the kitchen with the toaster oven on top and some appliances on the shelves.
Everyone else’s projects look interesting: Ana with her dyed log cabin quilts, Sandy’s woodpecker totem, Deirdre’s small wall hangings, Pamela’s wonky star log cabin blocks (I would like to see those), Debbie’s UFOs (you and me both sister) and, of course, Pokey’s bonding with the deliciously creamy tabby kitten, Khaleesi. My youngest cat, Senna, is a tabby whose colouring resembles an Abyssinian.
She is adorable! I love orange. I have been exploring fabric with stencils and how they work with the gelli plate. Then I turn them into fun journal pages or art journals. Scraps are used for post cards. I love your fabric Fridays.
Awww, Khaleesi reminds me of our Midas (also an orange cat) who was 19 when he passed. I’m working mostly on some lap quilts and baby quilts for charity – I’m bringing some over to the HMQG meeting for show and tell – maybe I’ll see you there. Really loving the retro vibe of today’s fabrics (and, in particular, this bird print) – never made an orange quilt, but would love to try it .
I am a scrappy quilter, both out of necessity, and desire. My thoughts are , like your precious kitty, to enjoy life as it is, from whatever vantage point is availiable. If I have to see outside the box ( like she is inside hers ) then my quilts will reflect that attiude of change. If I see from within a mindset of being controlled, then my quilts reflect a more controlled look to the completed project. I like scraps, but because I do, I hope that all my sewing , is as fun as hanging out with your little fur bundle of cuteness.
I am currently working on hand stitching surface design on a small piece. Have other small patchwork projects on the burner for eye glasses cases and such. LOVE the fabrics for the give away and your new baby is darling!
I’m partial to marmalade cats… Khaleesi is so cute! I’m also partial to making smaller projects that can be completed quickly, items like fabric postcards, prayer flags, collage projects. Enjoy your weekend.
I just finished a little something for a birthday gift this morning. I should clean out my mess of a room, but the weather is cooperating, so I think some dyeing will be taking place outside. Wishing you and your menagerie a fun weekend.
I’m working on applique blocks for a full sized quilt and starting a pieced black/white/red lap quilt. I like alternating between the two forms. I’m drawn to contemporary designs using star patterns for the pieced quilts. Khaleesi is adorable. Can’t wait for Long Beach.
I have just completed 2 quilt tops for family in Africa (which I will take on my visit to Cape Town later this year): one is a embroidered & trapunto quilted wall hanging for my brother and the other is a Flower Fairy bed quilt for my little niece – both still to be sandwiched & quilted. I have also quilted 2 wall hangings using the new Janome Acufil Quilting software program (so it is using embroidery designs to quilt in the embroidery hoop). Lastly, I made a Friendship Star block for a quilt block exchange at the request of an organization in Malaysia – this will be mailed this weekend.
Oooh, orange! My daughter just painted her sewing room orange and yellow and a little something made from these fabrics would be most fun. I am cleaning out my “quilting room” and turning it back into a bedroom for friends who are coming for the week. The question of the day, “Where to stash my stash.” Working on my Hawaiian needle turn applique is for when I get to sit down this evening. Looking forward to your talk at the luncheon in Houston,Pokey.
I am planning to do some random leaf outlines on a panel for a friend. Hope it works!
must be something about the Texas heat that encourages lots of a/c, chocolate chip cookes, good tunes and small projects. pillowcases as b-day gifts for children, burp cloths and blankies for babies, tote bag and small purse have been my thing lately. and, maybe because i heard “quilt-con” will be in Austin in Feb2013 (and I only live 60 miles north), a few weeks ago, i just had to make a small modern quilt (using almost every part of a local festival t-shirt). enjoy long beach!
I lead a 4H Quilting Club, and right now I am making some smaller items (thread catchers, pot holders, table runners etc) to sell at a fundraising event to support the next club starting in August. Thanks for the chance to win this fabric and make more items to sell!
I am finishing up a commissioned wall quilt on the theme of the farm buildings where the groom grew up. That should be finished tonight. Then I will start working on a special wall baby quilt for my new grandson, Lump, who will arrive around the end of August. Oh yeah, there is also that commissioned jacket that I have procrastinated over since last summer……..
She’s a sweetie! My son just found and reunited one just like her with the owner – they were very grateful. I am working on a muticolored silk jacket, a batik pieced lapsize quilt, and a 30’s quilt. Also have finishing touches on applique for a Christmas quilt. I am itching to start another art doll. And I just got a fun pattern for a skirt for my granddaughter – with curved strips of fabric. Love my summers in between busy school years. P.s. my orange stash drawer is emptiest!
I have been working on lots of small pouches and designing some new sewing patterns for accessories. I have a class to teach on saturday, so preparing for that, making blocks and writing up handouts. Aren’t we all so lucky to have so many fun things to keep busy with?
I’m making several blocks for a block swap. This is my first experience in a swap so it will be interesting to see the blocks that come back to me in a few weeks. Thanks sew much for this chance to win your giveaway!
I’m doing some modern types for charity quilts, using up my stash. Also like to experiment with free cutting and piecing techniques for art quilts and still on a black & white kick. So everything, I guess…
I always have several projects near the machine. Currently I am making some scrap sofa pillows for a friend and working on a queen scrappy bed quilt for me. I would love to add some orange goodies to my stash.
I am learning to art quilt and would love to win this fabric.
I am working on a few dolly sized quilts to sell at upcoming faires this fall. I am also making large square quilt sandwiches which will be used to make small wristlet style carryalls, also the the coming fall faires. Fun work, thanks for the give a way and CONGRATS on becoming a kitty mom! My girl Splash is lying beside the computer here, snuggled up sleeping. >^..^<
Love the new modern quilt patterns, especially the ones on white background. Lots of my summer quilts have been small, just learning new techniques. I have installed a “clothesline” in my sewing room so I can display new small quilts! Easy to change as new things are completed.
I am always making art quilts of one kind or another – whether large or small! 🙂
Working on a pumpkin wall hanging. Have batiks sandwiched together with texture magic between the batting and batik fabric. Plan to freemotion the pumpkin’s veins etc., and then paint some additional pumpkins on the background fabric and then machine applique the texture magic pumpkins to the background, and add some more paint etc. Plus watch the British Open – Golf, too hot to golf here. Enjoy your weekend and your sweet kitten.
Am making my first modern quilt. I just joined a new group that is forming. a modern quilt guild group. Am making my first challenge with kona solids strips
My delight is putting together fabrics not “planned” for togetherness by a manufacturer. Orange sweetness to add to the fabric stew in an art quilt would be delicious. Love your new studio partner!
I have been doing small wall hangings, but I am in the middle of struggling with the “Monster Quilt” a HUGE king sized quilt that I am trying to hand quilt. It has taken over my living room, so I need to quilt all the time to recover my living room. This is the last of “marriage” quilts that I have made for all of my nephews, and NEVER want to do another king sized quilt again!
Hi Pokey, Such a sweet kitty! My weekend will be finishing up my table topper for a blog hop coming up in week and down to the wire. Also, start on a quilt for my grandson’s birthday coming up and a quilt for quilt show in Nov sametime the Houston IQF. I was hoping for a vacation sometime next month. Even if it is a drive with my DH. Have a fun weekend with no rain. Judith, Texas
How sweet of you and your giveaway selection is awesome!!! Right now I am working on making table runners for my cousin to bring to his mom, two sisters and wife (I wanted to make gifts that were small enough to fit in a suitcase). He and his two sons are due to arrive from France to Canada on Sunday and we are very excited!!!
I am working on two quilts right now and need to dive into a third. I am working on a scrappy hexagon flower quilt – so much fun and my first try at EPP. I am also doing a Pezzy Prints hourglass quilt with a few solids thrown in for interest. I am planning to join the Great Granny QAL, too I am also collecting 2.5-inch squares for a super-scrappy quilt! Yikes – I better get busy!
Awww I need more cats! I just got the rest of the fabric I need to finish the top of an engagement quilt I’m working on, so I’m trying not to distract myself by too much other stuff until it’s done so I can have my design wall free again!
I am working on a a wallet, orange and green so this fabric would be welcome!
I am currently wirking on Christmas quilts for my 11beautiful grandchildren.
My daughter is visiting and admired one of my art quilts. She wanted to re-create it in her style. I think she thought it would take about an hour. We’ve been at it all evening, and haven’t even started the sewing yet. So much fun. She’s refashioned a pair of pants into a dress, and I made a purse with the remains. What a blast! and that’s how my sewing room looks…blasted.
I’m in the early/planning/organizational stage of a portrait quilt of my grandaughter at one year old – been looking up articles that describe the process of portrait quilts – which ones do I use? Probably a litlte bit of several!
My time is limited so I’m working on mug rugs and some bags:) Very fun, easy to complete. Then in August will be going to a 4 day retreat with Kathy McNeil and will be working on an art quilt. Love your new kitty and hope everyone is getting along well together:) Wish I was going to Long Beach, maybe next year it’s on my bucket list as is Houston!

I have little projects that need doing but I still prefer a challenge- so I like big quilts (and I cannot lie) and doing different techniques- sometimes I want simple piecing, sometimes I want glue stick applique!
I am making a “jelly roll” quilt! And I am having a blast! I love the colors and patterns of the fabrics and how they “play together”.
a wonky log cabin QS quilt for my daughter, a wool art quilt, a pictorial quilt of Morro Bay CA, a mini modern quilt.
I’m binding my spider web today, while enjoying the companionship of my quilty friends at a day long sew-in.
I’m working on a little wool quilt for Alzheimers Art Quilt Initiative as it’s county fair week and I needed something portable to work on while sitting at the fair with all the quilts.
This week I tried the ice parfait dying technique found in the last issue of QA. The results were spectacular! Now I am deciding on what to do next with these beautiful fabrics. Life is good and colorful at in my studio

I’m working on a modern quilt for my SIL, a jelly roll quilt for myself, a charity quilt, was just informed by my BIL’s granddaughter that she doesn’t have a quilt of her own and loves purple (how’s that for subtle?), and I am trying hexies for the first time.
Hi Pokey! I’m presently working on a quilted tote bag. I was hoping to finish this weekend but I have some shopping to do for a business trip:(. But soon…..I’ll be showing off my new bag!!
What a sweet kitty. Unfortunately, we’re allergic around here, so have to enjoy kitties at someone else’s home. Love the soft grey and orange fabrics in your give-away. I’m working on an on-going project to bead and embellish a landscape wall-hanging. Have to work a while, set it aside to let ideas perculate and then work some more. This weekend I plan to cut fabric for a golf themed H.S. graduation quilt for my grandson and kit up a Carpenter’s Wheel (a la Debbie Maddy) project to have ready to sew this winter when we are snowbirds in south Texas. Good to have something to do in a cool basement when it’s in the high 90’s outside this week!
Hi Pokey,
I am working on a small quilt for a friend who has moved away. Our friendship group decided to each send her a gift at her new home each Monday over the next two months. I don’t think she has figured it out yet as a collective gift but it is fun for all of us. Since she has moved from the Northeast to the Southeast, I’m doing a topper to remind her of the great fall colors of our Adirondack Mountains.
I have made 2 lovely throw quilts for 2 ladies that retired. I am quilting the flip flop one right now. I have also maade 2 tops for QOV, based on a qjuilt Luana Rubin posted that she received. They will be signature quilts that I take to Dragoncon over the Labor Day weekend. I will get all the costumes people (and maybe some celebs) to sign and make some great memories for me and an even greater quilt for some lucky service members!
I actually FINISHED 2 Jelly Roll race quilts (1 for me and 1 for my granddaughter) and 1 from 80’s “vintage” fabrics that I added charm packs to for my mother!! I’m thinking of experimenting with a combination jelly roll/charm pack race type quilt. Don’t now what will happen to the dimensions though.
I’d like to do a hexagon quilt. That’s my next big quilt project on my “want to do” list.

I love the orange fabric. Where did you get it?
